Our Greatest Need: Increased Faith in Jesus Christ

The greatest need in the church and throughout the entire world right now, speaking individually and collectively, is more Faith in Jesus Christ. Society continues to spiral downward, while anger and hatred continue to spiral upward, all due to a decline in faith in Jesus Christ. Faith in Christ is seen in the works and words of humankind. Just look at the words and works of people, and you quickly see little faith in Christ. Faith in Christ is the first principle of the true gospel of Jesus Christ: We believe that the first two principles of the gospel are, (1) Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, (2)  Repentance.

Having faith in Christ is a choice. Our sincere prayer is, “Lord, increase our faith” (Luke 17:5).

“Faith cometh by hearing” (Romans 10:17). Hearing the name Jesus Christ increases our faith in Him. Seeing the name Jesus Christ increases our faith in Him. Our own Self-talk saying, thus hearing the name Jesus Christ, increases our faith in Him.

Elder John Carmack said, “ if we want increased faith, such as Enoch gained, we must give ourselves over completely to our Lord, utterly trusting Him and striving to act as He would act in all circumstances. No matter how difficult and impossible the circumstances we face, we must retain the attitude that we are still in the Lord’s debt. Just keeping the commandments, while laudable, may be enough to maintain our faith but not enough to increase it. We must continue sacrificing and serving with no thought of reward. We do it out of love and gratitude for the Lord, to whom we owe everything.”

If we have complete trust in Him, our faith will increase, and that means the strength of our belief and our power to act will increase.

Elder John Carmack continues, “To increase our faith, we must

  • Do what is right and serve the Lord because we know, trust, and love Him with all of our souls.

    • Harbor no thought that we deserve a reward or thanks for what we do, although rewards will surely come.

    • Humbly ask, seek, and knock.

    • Never demand anything of our Lord, because we are always in His debt.

    • Leave to Him the final decision in all things, having the attitude “Not my will, but thine be done.”

    • Be prepared to sacrifice, even unto death, for our entire mortal lives.

As members of the Lord’s Church, we can increase our faith, if we desire, by going beyond the minimum requirements of the gospel and developing complete trust in the Lord. All of this is part of the golden ore found in Jesus’ interesting and subtle parable given in response to the early Apostles’ request, “Increase our faith.”

Philippians 4:13

Christ in america 3
The Bible Club of the Huntington Park Institute of Applied Medicine has adopted as its club motto the bible verse found in Philippians 4:13 which reads:
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Regarding this passage, M. Russell Ballard said, “Knowing this is another precious gift from God.”

Come Alive in Christ

2 Nephi 25:26 “We talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ”

We come alive in Christ through faith in Him. Talking of Christ and preaching of Christ increases our faith.  In this mortal life we live by faith; whereas, in our premortal life we lived more so by sight, for there we saw and lived with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ as we dwelt in their presence.

Faith in the living Christ is the first principle of the true gospel of Jesus Christ. His life “is central to all human history,” for “he is the light, the life, and the hope of the world” (see “The Living Christ” by modern day apostles and prophets). Coming unto Christ is to come unto the standard of Christ, striving to become like Him.

Doctrine of Christ

2 Nephi 31:2 True Doctrine of Christ

True doctrine of Christ is knowledge and information about Christ and also the knowledge and information He teaches, His gospel. True prophets teach true doctrine of Christ; whereas, false prophets and teachers teach false doctrine about Christ and His ways.

Satan instills into the hearts of people falsehoods about Christ to stir them up to anger against that which is true. Salvation cannot be obtained by believing in false doctrine. Jesus said, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). Knowing the true doctrine of Christ prevents us from being “tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men and cunning craftiness whereby they lie in wait to deceive” (Ephesians 4:14).

Faith in Jesus Christ

A major duty and obligation of church members and believers everywhere is to testify of Jesus Christ, that He lives and that He is the Son of God-the Savior of the world. A major purpose of the Bible and the Book of Mormon is to convince the world-both Jew and Gentile-that Jesus is the christ whose self-sacrifice was the perfect, infinite atonement for all mankind.

“Faith cometh by hearing.” As we bear testimony of Jesus Christ, more people will believe in Him, that He is. Faith in Christ is the first principle of the gospel. The foundation of one’s life must be faith in Jesus Christ, for this is life’s rock foundation that will never fail you.

The Rest of the Lord

The prophet Mormon, Moroni’s father, said,

“Wherefore, I would speak unto you that are of the church, that are the peaceable followers of Christ, and that have obtained a sufficient hope by which ye can enter into the rest of the Lord, from this time henceforth until ye shall rest with him in heaven.”

We can enter into the rest of the Lord, even now, and maintain this peace and rest forever. We can even rest with the Lord in heaven. This rest is peace, having the calm assurance that our lives are in harmony with His divine will and desires. We are in the obedient path of life. The world needs peace, and it starts with each individual person. In Christ comes all good things; therefore, come unto Christ and rest with Him and the Father, now and forever.
